The AWA, founded originally as the American Women’s Club, and later known as the American Welcome Association, has been serving Americans living in New Delhi since 1947.
Membership is open to all American citizens (and to spouses of American citizens) and entitles them to participate in the services and activities sponsored by the AWA.
All members are welcome and encouraged to serve & to volunteer in various worthwhile endeavors to help enrich your life and the lives of others.
The Objectives of the Association are:
To encourage social interaction among all members of the American community in New Delhi.
To organize cultural activities to enhance our knowledge of India.
To provide services such as the AWA Library and Thrift Shop.
To generate funds from the AWA activities and services to support our organization and its Outreach projects.
The Outreach Committee began in 1982 as the social services arm of the AWA. Members meet to review and discuss proposals from charitable organizations within New Delhi-NCR (shelters, schools, health clinics, etc.) that desire AWA assistance. After conducting a site visit and assessment of the organization, the committee strives to address the needs of the organization within the scope of AWA’s goals and guidelines. We also encourage individual AWA members to become directly involved with one or more of the organizations we assist.
AWA Membership includes library membership; family members can also check out books, DVDs and CDs.
If you love books, consider spending a few hours a month at the Library.
The Library features collections for children, young adult and adult patrons, Junior Fiction Series, Junior History, Junior Crafts, Children’s DVDs and CDs.
The AWA Thrift Shop collects donations for the AWA Outreach Committee. All donations (with the exception of perishables) are accepted! Funds from items sold in the Thrift Shop are used to purchase equipment and materials for NGOs. Items not sold in the Thrift Shop go to Charlotte’s Web, which sends items directly to NGOs to be used in a variety of ways.
The AWA Mela is an exciting event with over 200 vendors, food stalls, live entertainment, a children’s play area and more.
The AWA Mela has long been one of the largest and most sought after events in Delh/ NCR. 2,000-3,000 people come during the day to shop, eat, network and simply have a great Sunday while supporting AWA Outreach Efforts to support several NGOs in Delhi/NCR.
To help you get inspired, we organize several events like coffee morning, spring luncheon, author meet in Library, thanksgiving lunch, halloween family event, holiday cheer & many more.
Have you been avoiding the piles of clothes that you don’t wear anymore? Do old books occupy every inch of your living space?
Donate us if you have piles of things lying around that are of no use to you but might benefit someone else.
